What I discussed with Buhari – Archbishop of Canterbury

What I discussed with Buhari - Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby lailasnews
President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mohammadu Buhari is currently in the UK and earlier today he received Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, at the Abuja House, London.

After their meeting the Nigerian Presidency had circulated a statement detailing the outcome of the meeting.

The Archbishop has also released a statement on what was discussed with the Nigerian President

READ FULL STATEMENT BY THE ARCHBISHOP BELOW.

I expressed deep concern about the suffering resulting from raids on Christian communities and villages as far south as Delta State. We discussed the causes of such depredations, which have led to very many deaths and threaten an escalation of violence. I urged measures to restore confidence in the neutrality of the state, and spoke of the suffering of the poor in such tragedies.

I also raised the urgent situation of Leah Sharibu – the 14-year old Dapchi Christian school girl still held captive by Boko Haram for refusing to convert to Islam – and urged the President to do everything possible to secure her release.

I briefed President Buhari about my pastoral visit to Nigeria in 2014 following the abduction of the Chibok girls, and assured him of my continued prayers for the release of all those still in captivity. The President promised that the Government would do all in its power to secure their release.

No country or society can flourish without excellent education – so it was good to speak with the President about how education helps tackle poverty. I highlighted the vital role that churches in England play not just in educating a million children, but in providing them with values, identity and purpose.

Please join me in standing prayerfully with those suffering from the herder-farmer conflict, the Boko Haram insurgency, and all those mourning the loss of loved ones. It’s so important that we pray for the peace and progress of Nigeria – and particularly for the liberating peace of Jesus to be with all those held in captivity.

”You have no right to attack a pastor on church issue”- Apostle Suleman slams Daddy Freeze over tithing controversy

The General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries worldwide (OFM), Apostle Johnson Suleman, has waded into the tithing controversythat has been on for days.

The Pastor who replied the Cool FM OAP during a church service, said ‘if anyone is not a pastor, he has no right to attack a pastor on church issue. He should leave everything to God.’ Here’s what he said as he preached;

“Let it be clear that if anyone is not a pastor, he has no right to attack a pastor on church issue. He should leave everything to God. I only laugh. Somebody who is not a doctor cannot teach a certified doctor how to go about doing his job; he will just be laughed at. Someone who is not a journalist can’t teach a true journalist how he should do his work; they will just be laughing at him.

I wouldn’t have spoken on the issue but you don’t argue with a man whose mind is already made up on any issue. It is futile. And I’m not going to confuse anybody to pay tithe, no. if you attend my church and you decide not to pay tithe, it’s left to you. In my church they don’t pay me allowance. I live on my personal businesses and I write books. So far, I have written 52 books that are inspirational and I’m still writing. If you write books that are inspirational, believers and non-believers will buy. It is not as if it is only church members that buy pastors’ books. That alone is enough to sustain any pastor. So, you don’t just jump to criticize any pastor for buying private jets of expensive cars because you think it is tithe that they use to buy them.

If you asked me, there is nothing wrong with tithing. But tithes should be used by pastors to maintain Christianity, assist the poor in the church, the vulnerable and the stranded. Not that everything should go into the pastor’s pocket, that’s wrong. Every pastor should be on allowance.

That young man does not deserve a response; in fact, I’m not talking because of him but because my Papa, Pastor Adeboye had spoken, I’m speaking on the issue. Now, if it requires that we go into a debate, let’s have it. Yes, your tithe is not a license to make heaven but it is an acknowledgment of God’s mercy in your life. But because Papa Adeboye corrected the wrong notion and the young man dared to respond to him, I felt it was insulting. This is not about sentiment or emotion, it is about commonsense. You don’t respond to an elder in certain manner, especially a man of Pastor Adeboye’s standing.

There are things people shouldn’t just dabble into especially when it is not their field. Even if you mobilize the whole world against tithing, you will only end up being counterproductive because this is not your field. Men of God do not need to react to such issues because like I said earlier, once somebody has made up his mind on a position, nobody should argue with such a man. My reaction to such a man is, if that is your position, keep it, continue with what you believe but don’t confuse people to believe what you believe.”

Lagos ranks second cheapest city in the world

Nigeria commercial nerve centre, Lagos, has been ranked the second cheapest city in the world for expatriates.

According to a report by the Economic Intelligence Unit on Monday, Lagos which fell 16 places to 132nd place on the world priciest cities index joins Kazakhstan’s Almaty at the bottom.

The report said,

“Although Nigeria has been attracting significant interest and investment in recent years, the fall in global oil prices has driven a collapse in the value of the Nigerian naira, which pushed down relative pricing, despite strong local inflation. The relative cost of living in Lagos has more than halved since 2008, which might signal renewed interest from foreign investors, with price levels so low by international standards. “

The Worldwide Cost of Living 2017 report saw Asian cities take five of the top ten spots, thanks to a sustained recovery in the strength of the Japanese yen that propelled Tokyo and Osaka back into the top ten, alongside Singapore and Seoul.

Singapore was ranked the most expensive city in the world for expatriates for the fourth consecutive year.

Western Europe accounted for a further four cities, with stalwarts Zurich and Geneva in third and seventh position respectively.

Paris, the only Eurozone city, came in eighth position and the Danish capital Copenhagen, which pegs its currency to the Euro, rounded off the top ten.

New York was the lone North American representative, falling to ninth position owing to a slight weakening of the U.S. dollar, which also affected the position of other US cities.

The Worldwide Cost of Living is a twice-yearly survey that compares more than 400 individual prices across 160 products and services that include food, rent, transport and recreational costs, among others.

How Security guard of Federal Girls College Plateau arrange secondary schoolgirls for men for N5000

It has been discovered that a security guard in Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) Langtang in Plateau State pimps female students out to strangers for N5,000.

An undercover investigation carried out by The Cable yielded this shocking finding. The investigation also led to the discovery that male teachers are known to summon female students into their offices during night prep, between 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Teachers claim to be aware of this but say they have no evidence to implicate the offenders.

FGGC Langtang is a girls-only boarding school with little or no security. The school’s hostel has no fence such that it is very easy for strangers and locals to gain access to the hostel without being challenged. Local residents now walk through the school as shortcuts to their homes and strangers gain easy access to the hostels. The reporter who went undercover to uncover what has been going on in the school was able to enter the girls’ hostel without any restriction.

The undercover reporter got in contact with the security guard employed to protect the students but who chose to make extra money on the side by pimping the senior students out, and he was more than willing to provide the girls for a fee. The undercover reporter was able to get the guards phone number easily because it is common knowledge amongst men who have needed him to provide girls for them when they are in Langtang.

The guard gave assurances that getting girls out of the hostel “is no big deal”. Bani Guest House, a popular lodge along the Langtang highway, is well known to the girls, the guard said. He explained that most of them attend Sunday evening parties at Bani, where their boyfriends come to wait for them. When the reporter who disguised as a businessman met the guard, he told him that the girls in SS3 who were rounding off their final exams would make the perfect picks.

“I am giving you outgoing students,” he said. “There are some writing exams, it’s just to get a clue to know them and ask if they can do this for me. There are girls who do ‘runs’ but the issue is money.”

The guard, who then requested for money so he could move around and also “sort out” the girls’ transportation, revealed that there are a couple of schoolgirls who are into the act of sneaking out of the school premises.

The N5,000 was solely for the guard while the girls bargained with the customers after they’ve been pimped out to them.

“You’ll discuss how much you’ll give them,” the guard told the reporter as he pocketed the N5,000 given him as upfront for the task. “All those girls are small girls and they don’t know money much. If you treat them well, they will look for you if you’re still around.”

The guard had left his duty post. For hours, he was moving around the school, searching for girls who could be available under the tight deadline.

“I have arranged two girls now, and they will come to meet you when they are done with their exams today,” he later told the reporter over the phone.

The girls couldn’t make it eventually because they wrote their papers late and feared coming out of the school could jeopardize the other papers the following morning, the guard explained. He assured the reporter the girls would turn up after writing the day’s papers but at this point, the reporter decided to abort the mission for professional reasons.

One of the newly graduated girls, who later spoke with the reporter, said this particular guard is the go-to man pimping girls to strangers.

The girl said: “He used to be a kitchen staff. He impregnated one of the girls in the hostel, you know the hostel is close to the kitchen, and I think as a punishment, he was moved from the kitchen to the gate.”

One of the officials of Langtang’s old girls’ association disclosed that a year ago, they heard that girls were being pimped, but they could not substantiate the allegation.

The lady who spoke on the condition of anonymity said: “The pimp, we were told, wasn’t even a security guard but one of the male teachers. We have tried to investigate but we couldn’t find anything. We confronted the former principal — who is now retired — with this and she said there was no such thing going on. There was a specific teacher allegedly doing this with SS3 girls but no one could give his name or any useful information in getting to the root of the matter.”

She added: “We even got a girl whom we were told knew this pimp, and when we called her, she denied knowing a thing. So, we had to disregard the rumour, because if you tell us something is happening, you should be able to give us the needed information to work with. If we had a name at least, we could have done something covertly with some of the old girls who now teach at the college, and our Jos chapter could have showed up in the school unannounced.”

One of the graduating girls said she is not sure if girls are being pimped to strangers, but she knows at least three members of staff whom she claimed made sexual advances to the girls.

She said: “One teacher used to call girls to his office in the night. But, I don’t know what he used to do with them. One of the girls told us that when she went to his office, he only asked her out, and that when it’s weekend she would follow him to his house.”

Another teacher, it was alleged, would call girls to his office in the night, and it is not clear what he did with them.

“It is during prep time, 7-9pm, that we see girls going to the teacher’s office,” the graduating student said. She named all the teachers involved, but for legal reasons, TheCable chose to withhold their identities.

The girl further disclosed that at the ICT department, where girls go for biometrics for examination purposes, the man in charge — under the pretense of guiding them — would touch them sexually.

“That one will be touching girls’ breasts and buttocks,” the girl said.

The ministry of education, which directly supervises Federal Government Colleges, says it is not aware of the allegations of pimping at Langtang.

Chineye Ihuoma, director of press at the federal ministry of education, told TheCable: “If you have any proof, the best way is for you to write us formally and we will conduct proper investigations. But, how can a security man in the school be pimping girls to a stranger? How can?”

Though pimping out girls and sexual harassment is an open secret in the school, no one wants to speak for fear of the resulting backlash. Hence, the question, “How can?” continues to come up, thereby preventing further investigation into the case and corrective measures to stop and revert the decay in the school.

Asides the sexual harassment that goes on in this once prestigious institution, there are other problems the school faces and that includes the problem of insecurity and lack of infrastructures. The hostel has a broken fence and no protection from outsiders. Also, the students lack clean water. There is only one borehole in the hostel area hence students use water from an untreated well. They also sleep on broken beds and study in hostile classrooms while sitting on benches.

Speaking of the lack of security, a member of staff said: “People walk through the school premises unchallenged.

“It has become a shortcut for staff and people who now walk through the school to the main road and or their houses. And sadly, there are some boys who come in through the unfenced area to steal items from the girls’ lockers.”

One of the students said that some adventurous girls sneak out through the unfenced area to attend parties and meet with boyfriends in town.

Another student said: “Students are not allowed to go out of the school when in session, but the stubborn ones do sneak out to attend parties. They go through the back-of-school because there is no fence, but some go through the gate because the security is not so tight.”

Officials of the school were unwilling to speak on the record, instead, they directed the reporter to speak with the Ministry of Education in Abuja.

“I am a civil servant. I would advise that you speak to the ministry of education in Abuja,” Laura Dogo, the new principal, said when asked to comment on the various issues.

EFCC recovers over N11.9m for Redeemed Christian Church of God

One of the regional Ministers of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Mark Barango, has commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for being “an agent of transformation.

He said this while receiving a sum of N11, 984, 844, 11(Eleven Million, Nine Hundred and Eighty Four Thousand,  Eight Hundred and Forty Four Naira, Eleven Kobo only), recovered and returned to the church by the EFCC”.

Mr. Ishaq Salihu, South- South Zonal Head of the EFCC, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State handed over the money to him. The money was stolen by a banker and the Account Officer of the church, Ameh Cyril Idakwoji,  in a web of fraudulent diversion and suppression of the finances of the church.

According to the EFCC, troubles came for Idakwoji when Access Bank Plc petitioned the EFCC about some missing funds in the accounts of one of its corporate customers in Port Harcourt. The customer, Jepthah International School, East- West Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, could not access N37,000,000( Thirty- Seven Million Naira only) in its account with the bank.

The bank traced the scam to one of its staff, Idakwoji and named him the mastermind of the fraudulent dealings. Idakwoji doubled as the Account Officer of Jepthah International School and Redeemed Christian Church of God, Region 5, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He defrauded the RCCG by suppressing and diverting  cheques and cash meant for the Church to cover his shady deals in Jepthah International School. He was covering up by giving fake Statements of Accounts to both the school and the church.

To execute his criminal schemes in RCCG, he forged the letter heads of the church’s Region 5 and the signatures of the Pastor in charge of the Region. He also forged the signature of the church’s accountant and attached same to the August 2017 Salary Schedule of Jepthah International school to the tune of ( N7, 129, 128. 78).

The Church denied giving instruction for the payment of the salary of the school. Investigations by the Commission uncovered all the criminal movements of the fund of the church by Idakwoji and a sum of N11, 987, 844.11 found to have been stolen have now been recovered and returned to the church.

It will be recalled that a sum of N36,000,000( Thirty Six Million Naira), recovered from Idakwoji,  was returned to the management of Jepthah International School by the EFCC in September.

While presenting the money to the church, Salihu emphasized the commitment of the EFCC to bursting any financial and economic scam, no matter how complex. He reiterated the zero- tolerance of the Commission for corrupt practices and warned criminal elements in the country to desist from fraudulent practices. ” Crime and criminality are not limited to any group of people. They have no creed, no gender and no religion. The RCCG is a large church and we are pleased to have been able to recover the stolen money for the church”, he said.

An appreciative Pastor Barango promised that the church will continue to pray for the continued success of the Commission. (EFCC.ORG)

Monkey Pox virus: What Nigerians must avoid eating – FG

The Federal Ministry of Health has told Nigerians to avoid the consumption of monkeys, bush meat and dead animal as doing so could expose one to the risk of Monkey Pox disease.

Currently in Bayelsa State, a medical doctor and no fewer than 10 persons have reportedly been quarantined as a result of the virus.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, gave the advice in a statement by the Director, Media and Public Relations in the ministry, Boade Akinola, on Thursday

According to the minister, the disease neither had a cure nor a vaccine, noting, however, that there was no cause for alarm as it was mild.

The statement read in part,

“He (Adewole) said the virus was mild and there was no known treatment and no preventive vaccines , hence the public should be at alert and avoid crowded places as much as possible.

“He advised the public to avoid eating dead animals, bushmeat and particularly bush monkeys.”

The minister also revealed that test samples had been sent to the World Health Organisation (laboratory ) in Senegal but the result was still being awaited.

Sex allegations & corruption: Senate sets up 8 man panel to investigate Police Inspector General

The Senate has set up an eight-man ad hoc committee to investigate allegations of corruption brought against the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, by Senator Isah Misau (APC-Bauchi).

The Senate also mandated its Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to investigate Police allegations against Senator Misau, and present its findings to the House.

The Nigeria Police Force had alleged that Misau did not follow due process when he retired from the Force.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Senate’s resolution followed a Point of Order by Senator Misau, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Navy.

Misau had told his colleagues that he had been having a running battle with the IGP over the level of corruption in the NPF.

The senator said he deemed it necessary to bring the matter before the Senate because it had been in public domain for “some weeks now.”

He accused the IGP of blackmailing him because he dared to talk about the level of corruption in the Force.

“I am a retired Police officer and served for 10 years; my father served the Force for 34 years. In fact, he joined the Police before I was born.

“So, when I speak about the Police, I know what I am saying. When I speak about the Police, I speak with authority.

“I am concerned about what is happening in the Police in terms of bribery; there is a need for something urgent to be done to salvage the image of the institution.

“Before raising alarm on the irregularities in the institution, I called three serving officers and they confirmed to me that people pay more than N500,000 to get promoted.

“I also have other evidences that I am ready to release for investigation,’’ he said.

The lawmaker further alleged that the Police was generating money from companies where officers were deployed to serve.

He lamented that while most Nigerians were without security protection, the Force had deployed a large number of officers to guard companies and a few individuals.

“This is an open secret; it is obvious that even people with questionable character have Police protection and have been blaring sirens all over the place.

“One Police officer is supposed to serve 400 people, but in Nigeria, it is one Police officer to 800 people, while one private marketer has more than 30 policemen.

“A situation like that only depletes the number of Police personnel available to protect the ordinary citizens.

“We have excellent Police officers who are now demoralised because promotion is no longer based on merit and years of service.

“Another thing I found out is that there is illegal diversion of funds. Under the 2016 budget, there was a line item for purchase of Armoured Personnel Carrier, but instead of the APCs, luxury cars were purchased without virement,’’ Misau alleged.

On allegations that he left the NPF without due process, Misau said that he followed due process before retiring.

In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, said in view of the weighty allegations brought against the Police, the Senate would not hesitate to investigate the matter.

“We have listened to him and he has raised a number of issues which we can’t sweep under the carpet.

“We have to reform our institutions and deal with allegations of corruption so as to cleanse them.

“The ad hoc committee will deal with the area of allegation of corruption, while the Committee on Ethics and Privileges will deal with the allegation of the Police against Misau,’’ he explained.

NAN reports that the Deputy Chief Whip, Sen. Francis Alimikhena, is the Chairman of the committee; while other members include senators Joshua Lidani (PDP-Gombe), Binta Masi (APC-Adamawa) and Duro Faseyi (PDP-Ekiti).

Others include senators Nelson Effiong (APC-Akwa Ibom); Obinna Ogba (PDP-Ebonyi); Abdul-Aziz Nyako (APC-Adamawa) and Suleiman Hunkuyi (APC-Kaduna).(NAN)

‘How former permanent secretary Abba Moro, others shared N675m NIS job applicants’ money’ – Witness reveals

Two prosecution witnesses appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, narrating how the sum of N675,675,000 realised from 675,675 applicants who applied  for job placement at Nigerian Immigration Service in 2014, was shared.

The two were testifying as the fifth and sixth prosecution witnesses in the ongoing trial of the then Minister of Interior, Abba Moro,  and others on charges of recruitment fraud.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had instituted 11 counts against Moro; a former permanent secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Anastasia Daniel-Nwobia; and a deputy director in the ministry, Mr. Femi Alayebami.

The other defendant is Drexel Tech. Nigeria Limited, a firm that carried out the NIS recruitment exercise on behalf of the ministry.

The defendants were alleged to have defrauded a total of 675,675 Nigerian job seekers to the tune of N675,675,000 through alleged fraudulent collection of N1,000 per applicant as online application fee for jobs at the NIS.

Some of the applicants died during the exercise.

A former Head of Finance of Payforme Services Nigeria Limited, Mr. Augustine Ugorji, and an employee of Keystone Bank, Mrs. Bilikisu Mohammed, testified as the fifth and sixth prosecution witnesses, respectively.

The two witnesses, separately led in evidence by the Head of the prosecuting team, Mr. Aliyu Yusuf, told the court presided by Justice Nnamdi Dimgba how the proceeds of the recruitment exercise was shared among eight banks and other companies.

Ugorji narrated how Payforme was engaged by Drexel to provide online platform for collection of application fees from the jobseekers.

As Payforme’s former Head of Finance, Ugorji, who said he worked for Payforme from 2010 to 2016, said, “Drexel had a contract with Ministry of Interior for job recruitment.

“Provision of payment site or payment platform to receive the payment from applicants was sub-let to payforme.
“The process required the applicant to go to the website of the client. In this case, indirectly, the client was Ministry of Interior, because we did not have a direct dealing with the ministry.
“The applicant completed the form before he would then pay. The applicants were given opportunity to pay either through bank or card.
“The application would be validated and re-directed to the client’s site for update.
“Payforme does not receive cash, so we entered into agreement with banks to collect payments from the applicants.”
He listed the banks engaged by Payforme as Union Bank, United Bank of Africa, Diamond Bank, Zenith Bank, Sterling Bank, Ecobank and Enterprise Bank.
He said Interswitch was engaged to provide card as means of payment by interested applicants.

He said from the N1,000 paid by each applicant, Payforme was paid N150 out of which N70 went to the receiving bank.

He said, “The agreement between Drexel and Ministry of Interior was for each applicant to pay N1,000 and Drexel agreed to pay Payforme N150 from the N1,000.
“From the N150, Payforme was paid N80 and and N70 to the banks.
“The balance of N850 went to Drexel
“The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System, where banks do their clearing, was paid by Payforme in line with an agreement.
“We had 675,675 that made payment through our platform.”
He said after the banks deducted their N70 commission from the N1,000 paid by each of the applicants, the following amounts were remitted by each of the banks:

Taking the witness stand after Ugorji was cross-examined by the defence lawyers, Mohammed, who was Drexel’s account officer with Keystone Bank, also narrated how th money remitted to Drexel’s account was disbursed.

She said, “The account was opened on August 19, 2013 as a corporate account with two signatories — William Butau and Amodu Mahmud, who is the chief executive officer of the company.
“The first transaction that went into the account was in September 2013 and the amount was N20,000 for legal fees.
“Then, there were two major inflows into the account. The first was sometime in October 2013, the amount was 462,470,000.
“This amount was put in a fixed deposit. The second inflow was sometime in November 2013.
“The amount was about N111,967,200.”
The prosecuting counsel indicated to Justice Nnamdi Dimgba that he still had four to five witnesses to call.

The judge adjourned till November 7 and 8 for further trial. (Punch)

‘Police I.G slept with 2 serving police officers; Impregnated one’ – Senator Misau

Senator Hamman Misau made a startling revelation about the Inspector general of Police, Idris K. Ibrahim, recently, alleging that he had an illicit affair with two serving female police officers.

Misau who represents Bauchi central senatorial district in the Senate, through Order 43, stated that he was being attacked by the IG because he exposed the corrupt activities going on in the police.

PoliticsNGR learned that the senator dropped a bombshell shortly after, saying that the IG was involved in extra-marital affairs with two serving female police officers namely, Amina and Esther.

In his words; “Mr President, distinguished colleagues, instead of the IGP to address the issues I raised in my capacity as the Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he was busy attacking me.
The IGP has been in sexual relationship with two female serving Police officers, that is one Amina and Esther. He impregnated Amina and did a wedding secretly in Kaduna.

As a former Police officer, I can say authoritatively that it is wrong for an officer to have a relationship with female Police officer because of the nature of that work.”

Hamman further stated that the manner in which the promotion of police officers were being handled by IG Idris Ibrahim was corrupt, adding that officers paid as high as N500,000 to get promoted.

He also asked the Senate to investigate occurrences where powerful individuals in the country would have up to 30 police officers guarding them, whereas commoners do not have police around them.

It will be recalled that Misau and the Nigerian police have been locked in a battle for some time now over allegations of bribery and forgery.
